Ciao Magpie, ti puoi presentare a Motorhead Italia?

Mi chiamo Garry Bowler (ma sono conosciuto come Magpie). Ho suonato in una band britannica chiamata Mournblade dall'86 all'89 e mi è stato chiesto di unirmi ai Motorhead nel tardo 1991. I Mournblade hanno fatto da supporto ai Motorhead nel 1989 , era il Silent Night Tour, il 19 e 20 dicembre. Poi, dopo breve, ci siamo sciolti. Io ho continuato a suonare con Blacken (basso e voce). Abbiamo deciso di scrivere canzoni e di suonare in due, fino a che avremmo trovato un chitarrista adatto. Kerrang! ci ha dato 4/5 di punteggio per il nostro concerto!
La situazione ci stava desolando, in quanto non riuscivamo a trovare un chitarrista rock'n'roll. Abbiamo comunque registrato un demo con Bernie Torme* che ci ha aiutato alla chitarra per un po'. Comunque, inaspettatamente ho ricevuto una telefonata da Wurzel, chiedendomi di raggiungerlo in sala prove quel pomeriggio. Quando sono arrivato mi ha presentato Phil Campbell e mi sono seduto di fronte alla batteria di Philthy Taylor. Abbiamo sviluppato alcune idee di chitarra e le abbiamo registrate. A fine sera, dopo un paio di birre, Phil e Wurzel mi hanno chiesto se fossi interessato a unirmi ai Motorhead. E questo era prima che Philthy sapesse di essere fuori dal gruppo. Naturalmente ho detto di si immediatamente. Wurzel e io siamo rimasti in contatto dopo che loro sono tornati negli USA con il demo. Hanno fatto sentire il nastro a Lemmy e gli hanno detto di aver trovato il nuovo batterista.
Non li ho potuti raggiungere, c'erano una guerra civile, saccheggi e massacri a Los Angeles**, quando il gruppo stava per registrare il nuovo album.
Un batterista ospite suonò qualche pezzo su March Or Die***, non era sicuro andare lì. L'attesa per me è stata snervante. Erano pronti ad andare in tour e hanno scelto Mikkey Dee, che ha suonato qualche pezzo con loro durante la registrazione dell'album. Wurzel è rimasto in contatto con me e mi
ha chiesto scusa per la delusione procurata. Dopo un po' mi sono unito ai Medicine Hat e suono ancora con loro (in aggiunta ad essere tornato a suonare con Blacken in una side band che si chiama The High Priest Of Hell).

Come hai conosciuto Wurzel?

L'ho conosciuto nel 1989, quando ho suonato di supporto ai Motorhead.

Hai personalmente incontrato Lemmy in quel periodo?

L'ho incontrato in un locale notturno (il Gossips), a Londra. Noi suonavamo lì la sera e lui era seduto al bar. Dopo il nostro set si è avvicinato per complimentarsi con noi, specialmente col batterista. L'ho incontrato di nuovo quando vide i Mournblade suonare in un affollato Hippodrome, a Londra. E' stato lì che ci ha chiesto di supportare i Motorhead.

Vedi Wurzel adesso? Suoni con lui qualche volta?

Sono sempre in contatto con Wurzel, è stato chitarrista ospite durante un concerto del mio gruppo Medicine Hat, a Londra. Ho anche registrato con Wurzel una versione divertente di Ace Of Spades.

Chi sono i Motorhead per te?

I Motorhead sono i migliori rappresentanti del vero rock'n'roll. Sono un gruppo che mai ha seguito le mode (e molte ne sono apparse e scomparse), hanno sempre seguito il loro cuore e continuato ad offrire un terrificante spettacolo dal vivo. La musica si spinge costantemente oltre i limiti e Lemmy è un bravissimo scrittore di testi e un bravissimo poeta.

Wurzel ha lasciato i Motorhead a causa della vita on the road, così mi ha riferito. Come vedi la vita on the road? Sarebbe troppo dura per te o ti piacerebbe?

Mi piace sia suonare dal vivo e fare tour coi miei due gruppi. E' così che mi sfogo suonando la batteria.

** Qualcuno si ricorderà dell'immotivato pestaggio del 'nero' Rodney King, a opera di poliziotti bianchi. Il pestaggio venne filmato ma al processo i poliziotti vennero assolti, causando a Los Angeles un serie di terrificanti disordini.

*** Poi si seppe che I Ain't No Nice Guy fu suonata da Philthy Animal, Hellraiser da Mikkey Dee e tutte le altre canzoni da Tommy Aldridge.

Hi Magpie, could you tell something to introduce yourself to Motorhead Italia?

My name is Garry Bowler (a.k.a. Magpie). I played in the UK rock bandMournblade from 1986-89 and was asked to join Motorhead in late 1991.The opening band on the silent night tour on the 19 and 20 Dec at Hammersmith, London were Mournblade. Mournblade had split shortly after the Motorhead support and I continued to play with 'Blacken'(bass/vocals). We decided to write and perform as a two piece (bass anddrums) until we could find a suitable guitarist. Kerrang! gave us 4/5 for the live show!. Things were looking bleak as we could not find a rock n'roll guitar player. We did however record demo tracks with Bernie Torme who helped us out on guitar for a while. Anyway, out of the blue I received a phone call from Wurzel. Could I meet him in London at a rehearsal studio that evening. I met with him and was introduced to Phil Campbell and sat in using Phil Taylor's drum kit. We worked on a few guitar ideas and recorded them. At the end of the evening over a beer they
asked me if I was interested in joining the band. This was before 'Philthy' was told he was out of the band. Of course I said 'Yes' right away. Wurzel remained in contact after they flew back to America with the demo's. They played the demo's to Lemmy and told him they had found a new drummer. There was civil unrest, looting and mayhem were taking place in L.A as the band were due to record the next album and guest drummers appeared on the recordings for the album. It wasn't safe to travel. The waiting was unbelievable. They were due out on tour and Lemmy chose to use Mikkey Dee who had played on a couple of tracks. Wurzel kept in touch all the while and sent his apologies for the disappointment. I joined Medicine Hat soon afterwards and still play with them today (as well as being back with'Blacken' in a side band 'The High Priests of Hell)

How did you know Wurzel?

I know Wurzel through my contact with Motorhead in 1989 when we (Mournblade) supported them

Have you met personally Lemmy those days?

I met Lemmy in a nightclub (Gossips) in London, he was stood at the bar when Mournblade were playing. After our set he complimented the band and especially 'Blacken' our bass player. I met Lemmy again when he saw Mournblade playing to a full house at the Hippodrome in London. It was
there he asked us to support them.

Do you see Wurzel now? Are you playing with him sometimes?

I have stayed in contact with Wurzel, he has played live with my band Medicine Hat as a guest at a London club date. I have also recorded with Wurzel on a fun cover of 'Ace of Spades'.

Who Motorhead are for you?

Motorhead are the finest exponents of no-nonsense Rock and Roll. They are a band who have never followed trends (and many have come and gone), have always followed their hearts and continue to deliver one hell of a live show. The music is constantly pushing boundaries and Lemmy is one hell of
a great lyricist/poet.

Wurzel left Motorhead mainly because of the hard life on the road, he told me four years ago. How do you see the life on the road? It would be too hard for you or you do think it would be your perfect living?

I enjoy touring and playing live both with Medicine Hat and my side band The High Priests of Hell. it is where I get the most out of playing drums.

** Somebody of you would remember of the black trucker Rodney King being thrashed by white policemen, in Los Angeles. Despite the thrashing was filmed, all the policemen were discharged, causing a terrifying reaction among the non white people.
