INTERVISTA A JOE PETAGNO, luglio 2004

Joe Petagno è nato negli Sati Uniti nel Capodanno del 1948 e sin da giovane è diventato uno degli artisti più richiesti e quotati nel mondo del Rock. Nonostante sia schivo di carattere, ha accettato di rispondere ad alcune domande all'indomani dell'uscita di Inferno.

Joe, tu sei autore delle più belle copertine degli album dei Motorhead, perché non ci spieghi un po’ del lavoro che fai con loro. Come hai incominciato a lavorare con Lemmy?

JP: Ho incontrato Lemmy nel 1975, quando ebbe appena lasciato gli Hawkwind (il gruppo rock-psichedelico col quale Lemmy suonò dal ’71 al ’75, ndt). Mi chiese di disegnare un logo a forma di testa per il suo nuovo gruppo Motorhead! Tre settimane dopo la testa nacque e da allora siamo stati come compagni nella stessa missione!

Quando hai iniziato, artisticamente, a disegnare copertine? Voglio dire, quand’è stato il tuo primo lavoro per una band?

JP: Billion Dollar Babies di Alice Cooper, l’ho fatta quando avevo 23 anni, in California.

Hai fatto splendidi lavori per molti gruppi nel mondo e sembra che tu tragga ispirazione da ognuno degli stessi gruppi con cui lavori. Nonostante questo, i vari aspetti dello snaggletooth (la testa dentata dei Motorhead, ndt) sembrano che siano i più famosi in assoluto. Dove hai trovato l’ispirazione per crearlo e come spieghi che il tuo nome da artista sia legato a questa icona?

Il tuo nuovo lavoro ha lo stesso aspetto dei vecchi album dei Motorhead nonostante i progressi tecnologici. Usi il computer per migliorare i colori o le linee?

JP: No! Non uso computer nel mio lavoro. Mi piace un pennello carico i colori. È qualcosa di naturale che i computer non possono fare… non ancora!

Quali sono le tue copertine preferite?

JP: NON HO COPERTINE PREFERITE ma Abraxis di Santana, Aoxomoxoa dei Grateful Dead e Another Perfect Day dei Motorhead le trovo fra le più interessanti.

Quando lavori coi Motorhead, come una nuova copertina viene concepita? Lemmy ti dà molte direttive o tu crei tutto da solo?

JP: Di solito faccio il lavoro da solo in quanto Lemmy si fida di quello che faccio, ma qualche volta interviene e allora lavoriamo insieme. Orgasmatron è stata una sua idea!

Hai fatto copertine per gruppi death metal, come i brasiliani Krisiun e Abhorrence… Pensi che il death metal calzi bene con la tua personalità o devi rivedere le tue idee quando lavori con questi gruppi?

JP: Io sono un assassino nato! Ha! Ha! La mia arte è sempre stata all’opposto estremo del normale ma naturalmente la musica e i testi la influenzano molto…tu devi seguire i tempi… o anticiparli di cinque minuti!

Che genere di musica stai ascoltando attualmente?

JP: Ascolto molta roba diversa, da Wagner e Mahler ai Sepultura e ai Converge, dai Brutal Truth ai Canned Heat con un po’ dei My Dying Bride e molto, molto i Motorhead!

Guardando molte delle tue copertine sembrerebbe che tu usi il guazzo la maggior parte delle volte. Con che tipo di tecnica ti piace lavorare?

JP: Proprio col guazzo la maggior parte delle volte ma uso anche colori acrilici e oli. La nuova copertina dei Motorhead INFERNO è un olio.

Hai lasciato gli U.S.A. molti anni fa e ora vivi in Danimarca. Perché hai deciso di vivere là?

JP: Già, mi sono mosso molto all’interno degli Sates, poi sono partito per l’Inghilterra, poi sono andato in Francia , in Spagna e poi ho trovato l’amore della mia vita in Danimarca. Dove sto ora si è molto liberi, mi piace molto!

Hai inserito alcuni dei tuoi dipinti in un mazzo di carte da gioco chiamato “The Deck of Death” (“Il mazzo della morte”, ndt). Leggendo le parole che hai usato per pubblicizzarlo ho notato che ci sono rime tratte da Ace Of Spades dei Motorhead. Chi ti ha dato l’idea di creare questo mazzo?

JP: Ho pensato che il mondo avesse bisogno di un mazzo di carte che dipingesse il mondo com’è adesso nel XXI secolo: MORTE E DISTRUZIONE! Un anno dopo George Bush ha attaccato l’Iraq e abbiamo avuto un altro mazzo della morte (quello con le foto dei più grandi ricercati in Iraq, ndt)… ma il mio è arrivato prima…capisci quando voglio dire che bisogna anticipare il mondo di cinque minuti?

Joe Petagno was born in the United States on the New Year's Day of 1948 and since he was young he began one of the most wanted and highly-esteemed artists in the rock'n'roll world.

Joe, You’re responsible for the most famous album covers of Motörhead,
for this work there are some people that think your art is exclusive
for Motörhead, so explain for us a little about your work with this
famed band. How did you started working with Lemmy?

JP: I met Lemmy in 1975 when he had just quit Hawkwind,he asked me to
design a "HEAD" Logo for his new band MOTORHEAD! 3 weeks later the head
was born! And we have been Brothers on a mission ever since!


When your art became an album cover? I mean, what is your first work with
a band?

JP: Alice Cooper's Billion dollar Babies,I did when I was 23 years old
in California.

You’ve made amazing works for bands all around the world and it seems like
you take more ad more inspiration on each one you work. Despite of it,
those variations over the “Snaggletooth” seems to be the most famous ever.
Where did you take inspiration to create it and how do you explain that
your name as artist is still always so close to this icon?

JP:Snaggletooth is my bastard son he just keeps evolving with the
changes Lemmy and I as well as the world keep going through in order to be
complete.

Your work have the same looking of the old Motörhead albums despite of
technological progress. Don’t you use computers to increase the perfection
of the colors or the lines?

JP:No! I don't use a computor in my work.I like a brush loaded with
color.it's spontaneus computors can't do that ...not yet!

What is (or are) your favorite cover?

JP:I DON'T HAVE FAVORITES but Santanas Abraxis and the Grateful deads
aoxomoxoa, as well as another perfect day are very interesting.

When working with Motörhead, how a new cover gets created? Does Lemmy
makes too many demands or do you create the whole concept?

JP:Usually I do the whole it all Lemmy pretty much trusts me to do,it
right,but sometimes he gets involved and we work together,orgasmatron was
his idea!

You’ve made covers for Death Metal bands, such as Brazilian band Krisiun
and Abhorrence… Do you think that Death Metal fit well with the art you
always did or do you think you had to create a new concept to work with
them?

JP: I'M a natural born killer! ha ha ! My art has always been on the
extreme side of the fence but of course the music and lyrics influence it
alot...you,have to follow he times...or thry to be 5 minutes in front of
them!

When you are working upon a new idea for album cover, do you first listen
to the music or just start painting without listen to it? What’s the
importance of the music and/or lyrics on the development of a new
illustration?

JP: The music is very important as I just said I always listen to the
band music whenever possible when I'm designing a sleeve.

What kind of music or artistic concept do you really prefer to work with?

JP: Heavy,black,death Metal, or anything else that needs an extreme
form of art like some horror or fantasy book covers or card games..

What kind of music are you currently listening to?

JP: I listen to a lot of different things from Wagner and Mahler to
Sepultura and converge to brutal truth and canned heat with a little my
dying bride thrown in and lots and lots of Motorhead!!!

Looking some of the covers it seems like you work with gouache most of the
time but not all the time. What kind of material do you like to work with?

JP:Mostly gouache but I also use acylic and oils the new Motorhead
art for INFERNO is oil paint.

You left the USA many years ago and now you live in Denmark. Why did you
decided to live there? Speak some more about the countries you’ve moved
to.

JP: yeah I've moved around alot I left USA to live in England ended up
in France for awhile and Spain and then found the love of my life in
Denmark,where I am now it's a very liberal place I like it here!

You’ve compiled some of your paintings released on a deck called “The Deck
of Death”. Looking at some advertisement about it, there are some words
from Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades”. Who gave you the idea of creating this
deck?

JP:I thought the world needed a deck of cards which was a deck that
depicted the world as it is in the 21 century DEATH AND DESTRUCTION! One
year later g. bush attacked Irak and we got another deck of death ...but
mine was out first...see what I mean about having to be 5 minutes ahead of
the reat of the world.
